A lawyer by training, and architect of the abolition of the death penalty, Robert Badinter died on Friday at the age of 95.

He will have the honors of the Republic. Former Minister of Justice Robert Badinter, who died on Friday, February 9 at 95, will be the subject of a national tribute. This was announced by the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, during a trip to Bordeaux on Friday.
“Lawyer, Keeper of the Seals, man for abolishing the death penalty. Robert Badinter never stopped pleading for the Enlightenment,” wrote the head of state on X a few minutes after the announcement of the death of the lawyer, who notably worked for the abolition of the death penalty as Minister of Justice in 1981.
“He was a figure of the century, a republican conscience, the French spirit,” also commented Emmanuel Macron, who attended a minute of silence observed on Friday at the National School of the Judiciary, in the presence of Gérald Darmanin and 'Eric Dupond-Moretti. “I will have the opportunity to speak during the national tribute that we are organizing in conjunction with the family,” declared Emmanuel Macron, quoted by France Bleu.
